Ionic air purifiers
"Indoor pollutants are a serious concern because
most people spend as much as 90 percent of their time indoors. The
U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies of human exposure
to air pollution indicate that indoor levels of many pollutants
may be two to five times—and occasionally more than 100 times—higher
than outdoor levels."
Clean air is not only important to your health it is also important
to your general well-being. The smell of fresh air is stimulating
and envigorating for the mind and your mental state.
Breathe pure air - An air purifier will dramatically improve the
climate in your home or in the office. Especially if you are not
enforcing a strict non-smoking policy and you regularly have smoking
guests or if a member of your family smokes an air purifier is invaluable.
Some Air Purifiers come with with ionizer and fragrance dispenser
- For me the ability to spice up the climate in my home with exotic
fragrances is such a gift. Think about it - Our sense of smell is
more probably one of the most underrated in our culture today -
We visit fancy restaurants to satisfy our sense of taste - we go
to concerts to satisfy our sense of sound. We travel to foreign
countries to see mountains and other wonders of nature- but rarely
do we do something specifically to satisfy our sense of smell. And
that is a shame since it is such a huge and important part of our
daily life.
Types of air purifiers
There are a few general types of air purifiers and making some distinction
will help you make an easier decision. Always when buying new home
equipment it's always a good idea to ask yourself what your actual
need is. Why am I buying this equipment? Keep that in mind and use
that to filter out some of the sales bogus. By the way, the Internet
is a great resource when it comes to air purifiers. You can gather
alot of useful information and safely buy the equipment when/if
you decide to do so.
Below we have made a short guide the different kinds of air purifiers:
Carbon air filter purifiers (removes odors)
Carbon is an active material used for many things in science and
a few things in everyday life. It has one great advantage in concern
to air filters and air purification, namely that it's extremly active.
By active is meant active in the chemical sense and in a way that
makes it react with many types of small particles in the air. Carbon
air purifiers will remove some of the odors from the air in your
home and odor removal is the main purpose of this type if air filter.
If you don't have problems with odors in your home there will be
little point in aquiring carbon air fiters.
A downside to carbon air filters is that they won't last forever.
The air filter in the air purifier itself will have to be replaced
regulary. And for your information, they will not absorb carbon
monoxide or other dangerous gaseous pollutants in the home. But
if you have suspecion about high density of dangerous pollutans
you are probably better off locating and taking care of the sources
of these rather than getting an air purifier.
Electrostatic air purifiers
The electrostatic air purifiers remove particles from the environmental
air. Particles such as fine animal hair that circulates in the air,
some sizes of dust particles and other elements that will be caught
by the electrostatic charge in the filter.
Technically speaking, the filter works by applying an electronic
field across the filter/electrostatic plates and thereby attracting
particles that can be charged - which most can. The good thing about
this air filter type is that you do not need to change it, only
clean it.
What will the electrostatic air purifier remove?
- Dust
- Pollen
- Smoke
- Plant and mold spores
- Mildew and fungus
- Animal dander (not as effective as the carbon air filter though)
- Paint and carpet fumes
- Flooring adhesive fumes
- Cleaning products fumes
Electrostatic air purifiers are effective when it comes to reducing
airborne allergens, such as for example pollens. It has come
to our attention that some physicians recommend electrostatic air
filters, electrostatic furnace filters and electrostatic air cleaners
for indoor airborne allergy prevention. If you have personal
experience with this, we'd like to hear from you.
HEPA air purifiers
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particle Arresting. This
is the best and most efficient type of air purification.. The high
effictive particulate arrestors (HEPA) are capable of taking out
even some of the smallest particulates in the air. Again this is
an interesting feature for allergics and who have polluted air in
their home.
HEPA Filters were developed by the Atomic Energy Commission during
the second world war to remove radioactive dust. HEPA filters are
today used in many professional relations: They are used to clean
rooms where sensitive electronis are developed, hospital surgery
rooms, bio-engineering, pharmaceutical processessing, and any application
where reduction or removal of very small particles is required.
HEPA air purifiers cleans the air 99.97% of all particles including
bacteria, fungal and other microbiological organisms.
The HEPA air purifier has a filter made up of millions of small
glass fibers which the air has to pass. These tiny fibers will collect
the particles and the HEPA filter will actually become more efficient
over time as particles fills out the passages in the filter making
it even more "dense".
The HEPA aircleaners typically will have a life time from two
to four years after which they will have to be exchanged. If you
want a smoke removing filter, the HEPA air purifier system will
not do the job...although you can get optional additions to your
system that will enable both the HEPA function and the smoke removing
ability.
Because of the HEPA's high filtration capability, this filter type
is usually regarded the best in terms of removing allergenes.
