Floor lamps
Floor Lamps:
Floor lamps are portable, can be used in any room, and in one fixture
you can combine all three types of lighting; task, ambient and accent.
Because they are portable you can unplug the lamp, move it around
the room or to a different room. They illuminate dark corners, provide
great reading light, or can add the perfect decorative accent to
a room. Some floor lamps are adjustable in height, allowing you
to position the shade to your advantage and taste.
Floor
lamp styles come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and styles
with selections from functional to decorative. A popular floor lamp
is the torchiere (lamps with upside down shades) which provides
an interesting alternative by focusing intense light up to illuminate
the ceiling, architectural features, or flood a dark corner with
softer reflected light. Most torchieres use halogen light bulbs;
however some manufacturers are now producing torchieres that use
energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps. These CFL torchieres
are a great way to efficiently produce ambient light for a room.
Look
for floor lamps with 3-way sockets to allow you to change your lighting
levels for different activities.
For
reading, floor lamps should be used behind or to the side of a sofa
or chair, casting light directly on the work area. Floor lamps are
most effective when glare is reduced by placing the bottom of the
lampshade at the reader's eye level.
