What is a furnace filter used for?
A furnace filter is used to improve air quality in your home and protect the blower motor and mechanical parts in the furnace. Some particles in the air don't disappear from your regular cleaning routine. These particles include pollen, mold spores, bacteria and more. These particles vary in size but are often so small that they will not be filtered out by your respiratory defense mechanisms. This can lead to several health issues such as lung dysfunction, cancer, allergies, infectious disease, and minor issues such as eye irritation. The best way to reduce the particles in your home is get use air filters/furnace filters. There are several types of filters on the market. Some are made from fiberglass, metal or natural fibers. Always follow the instructions that come with the filter you choose. Electronic Filters need to be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis to maintain the maximum efficiency level.

Washable and reusable furnace filters
These types of filters are not as effective as an (electronic) xxx- You will also find that they are somewhat difficult to clean which ultimately impairs airflow and makes them less effective.

What about an electronic air cleaner?
Electronic air cleaners are rather expensive but they do provide the most thorough cleaning of the air in your home. An electronic air cleaner must be cleaned at least monthly to maintain effectivity.

Changing filters
A furnace filter should be changed once every 3 months. Under circumstances that lead to increased amount of particles in your home frequent change of filters is recommended. These circumstance include having several pets or if you are renovating your home. If you don't change the filter often enough it may become clogged. This will reduce airflow and likely damage the furnace.

High effeciency filters vs. standard fiberglass filters
The cheap fiberglass filters are just for protecting your furnace whereas the more expensive high effeciency filters will also clean the air in your home.

What about HEPA Filters?
HEPA filters (HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) are not typically used in furnace filters. Although very good at capturing small particles A HEPA filter is ineffetive when it comes to airflow.
