Pool filter

Pool Filter continued
A sand pool filter looks like a large ball that is between two
and four feet in diameter. Older models of sand filters are housed
within metal tanks. It is the sand within the sand pool filter that
strains out the impurities as the water makes its way through. The
sand pool filter functions by allowing water to enter the top or
side of the filter through either a multi-port or piston backwash
valve that sprays over the sand. The grains of sand have sharp edges
that catch the impurities. The water is them pushed through the
lateral and bottom manifolds, where it is then sent out of the filter.
There is a drain pipe at the bottom of the tank that is used for
emptying out the water when it is necessary.
Cartridge pool filters are very similar to DE filters, except for
the lack of DE. Water flows into a cylindrical tank in which there
are at least one cylindrical cartridge made up of fine, pleated
mesh material. It is this mesh that strains out the impurities.
Instead of having to backwash, like with a DE, you simply have to
remove the filter and wash it to make it clean again.
