A portable air conditioner is a console unit that can be moved from room to room and other locations with ease. However, they cost more than a window unit and use more energy, but overall, portable units are advantageous to people who just need local cooling or need to move the unit from time to time. That said though, I would always recommend checking out the prices of each unit as with everything else, the prices change all the time.

With invention of the window air conditioner unit, came the relief of hot summer nights. We all are familiar with the large heavy units that had to be installed in the window of our homes. In the early days we did not care that the unit weighed more then our child, as long as we could feel the coolest from its fan. Then of course over time then made small units, lighter units, and more energy efficient window units. Then came central air conditioner units and the unsightly window unit started to be fazed out. But what if you did not have gas heat (which is need to run a central air conditioner)? And what if you lived in a building that would not allow a window unit? And the portable room air conditioner was born.

Is the cost of being cool making your hydro bill turn red hot? I am told that these portable room air conditioners actually take up to three time the energy to cool the room than a conventional window unit. However it is convenient if you have no other way to cool your home down. I am thinking a fan would be cheaper, but if you can afford a portable room air conditioner then perhaps this is just the thing for you to try out. I would strongly suggest purchasing one in the off season when good deals are to be found, and also do some on line research as to which one is the right model for you.
