Using a water purifier can be a good solution for many homes. Unless you are lucky enough to live in an area where the water is absolutely crystal clean and clear, the water often holds some unpleasent particles also. This can be clorine, organic particles, unwanted minerals and chemicals such as chlorine for example.
For example, when chlorine in your water mixes with the heat of shower water, the chlorine will vaporize into a gas. For some people with asthma or chemical sensitivities, this vapor can act like a trigger to cause an asthma attack or an allergic reaction.

There are different types of filters used in a water purifier system. They three main kinds are devided like this:

  • Fiber media filter
This is the most common type of water filter. Often they use just a paper or fiber media to trap particles. This is the least effective form of filtration used in water purifiers. Depending on the porosity of the media, very small particles can be trapped. Although it can trap very small particles it will not remove odors and chemicals, like clorine for example.

  • Reverse osmosis filter
These water filters produce pure water by driving untreated water or tap water through a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane lets the water molecules pass through, but traps the impurities. The process is quite a slow process for a residential-grade filter. It may produce only a few quarts of pure water per day. So you want to consider the purpose of the water purifier before buying and installing it. The filter is good for producing drinking water for example, but not for applications that requires alot of pressure.

  • Charcoal filter
This is another common filtrations method. Most residential water purifiers use activated-charcoal filters. These are used in icemaker filters, under-counter filters, countertop filters, whole house filters, to mention some examples. Charcoal will remove chemicals like clorine, unwanted odors it will also clean miscolored water.

A new type of filter called the KDF has recently emerged. This filter and has some advantages compared to the other kinds of filters mentioned above.
